How can I contact someone from the class to find out more information?
Do I need to purchase a uniform?
That might take a long while to answer that question. Aikido is a relatively modern martial art. It’s primary focus is the blending with an attacker’s energy and redirecting it to protect yourself and possibly the attacker from harm.
Please visit the main page for our current class times. Being a university club and there being a demand for time in the martial arts room, sometimes our schedule fluctuates.
Classes are in the Student Recreation Center on the campus of Southern Illinois University. Tuesday and Thursday we meet in the martial arts room. Saturday we meet in racquetball court #2. Wednesday basic weapons are held in racquetball court #3.
If you are curious about Aikido and would like to observe a class, you are welcome to come and watch. If you need any help getting into the building so you can observe a class, please let us know. Please remember that we like to limit new student intake to the first six weeks of class.
Costs for training with the SIU Aikido Club are $30 per semester. If you wish to test and gain ranks in Aikido, you need to become a member of our national organization, Aikido Schools of Ueshiba, (annual dues: $35) and pay the testing fee ($35 per test).

You can E-mail Karen or Rob Gallegly. We would be glad to answer any questions that you might have to the best of our abilities.
Do
I need to purchase a uniform?
Generally I would answer “no” to this question. We know that students at SIU have other things on which to spend their money. However, there are exceptions. If you would like to attend a seminar, either at Carbondale or at another dojo, we request that you have a dogi (uniform). If you plan on testing, it is required that you have a dogi.
Additionally, we recommend that when you train, dogi (uniform) or no dogi, you wear something that covers you knees. We do some training while kneeling. When moving around during this type of training, it would be painful on your knees if they were not covered.
